School Overview

Mascot: Trojans

Colors: Red and Gray

Truman is located south of I-20 nestled between the fast-growing Westchester and Lake Ridge communities. We are unique with a small population with approximately 580 students. Although a traditional campus, Truman offers all learners the opportunities to experience a variety of choices. Some of the choices offered include:

  • Advanced academic curricula
  • An award-winning fine arts program
  • An active student council
  • A competitive Junior Cadet Corp
  • A full athletic program

Not only do we offer choices for our students, but we pride ourselves in partnering with the stakeholders and offering them opportunities to be involved. We have started an All Pro Dads program that equips dads with tools in their role as an active parent. We also have an active PTA where parents get involved supporting the campus with a variety of student-centered events; school dances, 8th-grade formal dance, athletic banquet, game concessions, and annual homecoming events. We invite the parents to join us on designated academic nights in order to expose them to the academic curriculum and to connect the learning from school to home.

Our campus is a home away from home for our students. They are involved in many student groups that build social character, enhance hidden talents and build on their academic achievements. These groups include, but are not limited to, art club, Lego League, drone club, AVID, National Junior Honor Society, and National Junior Art Honor Society.

School Hours

8:50 am – 4:15 pm

Students will need to get a tardy pass from the front office prior to going to class if they are tardy.

If a student receives four tardies in one nine-week period, they will be assigned after school detention.  If they receive more, they will be ineligible to attend any campus parties, pep rallies, or other after-school events.  The expectation for all students is that they arrive at school on time, and they get to class on time.

History

Truman Middle School opened its doors in November of 1980 with about 400 students. Truman’s unique design was a major change from the traditional junior high school building. It featured a two story square building where all the classrooms surrounded the administrative offices on the first floor and the library on the second floor. A cafetorium (cafeteria/auditorium) was connected to the building along with two fine arts classrooms, competition gym and auxiliary gym. Five classrooms and three science labs were added on the east side of the building in 1987. Another eight classrooms, band hall, and learning resource center (library) were added in 1993. In addition, the library on the second floor was converted to a computer technology lab. 2008 marked the addition of four new science rooms.
