TRUMAN'S HISTORY

MASCOT: TROJANS

COLORS: RED AND GRAY

Truman Middle School opened its doors in November of 1980 with about 400 students. Truman’s unique design was a major change from the traditional junior high school building. It featured a two story square building where all the classrooms surrounded the administrative offices on the first floor and the library on the second floor. A cafetorium (cafeteria/auditorium) was connected to the building along with two fine arts classrooms, competition gym and auxiliary gym. Five classrooms and three science labs were added on the east side of the building in 1987. Another eight classrooms, band hall, and learning resource center (library) were added in 1993. In addition, the library on the second floor was converted to a computer technology lab.

There have been numerous changes throughout Truman’s twenty-five year history. However, the one thing that has remained constant is the pursuit of excellence. Even one of the cheers performed by the cheerleaders states that “We’re Truman and We’re Better!” This creation of this cheer was developed when former principal, Sharon Allen, would constantly tell the students and teachers, “We’re Truman and We’re Better!” This motto served as the catalyst for students and teachers to be the best in all areas at all times for many years to come.

Truman Middle School encourages and welcomes parent involvement in their children’s education. We believe that parents, teachers, and administrators must work together to help students be successful. One way to be involved is by joining the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA organizes a volunteer program each year where parents are able to work in the copy room or concession stand and/or work with individual teachers as needed. Additionally, parents are needed to help with fundraising, chaperone dances, and serve on the PTA executive board. In 2005-06, we hope to have parents involved in a school wide mentoring program for struggling students.

We hope that this information about Truman Middle School has given you a brief glimpse at the history and culture of this school. We believe that Truman’s dedication to academic excellence and positive warm learning environment will encourage all the students to say, “We’re Truman and We’re Better!
